Red Hat Society at Stevenage Carers’ Café

Red Hats at Stevenage

This week at the Stevenage Carers’ Café, Carol Marks from the Red Hat Society gave a fun presentation to the group about Red Hatting. With a choice of red hats for the group to try on and with many of the ladies also wearing something purple, the Carers’ Café made a very colourful display.

Known as ‘Lady Gadabout’, Carol belongs to the Fiery Fascinators Chapter based in Hertfordshire which is run by ‘Mags, Queen of Herts’. The Chapter’s aim is for members to meet new people and have a good time, with the wearing of a red hat or fascinator being a symbol of their friendship. The society meets regularly for coffee, tea and lunch in addition to other fun events and members always wear red hats and something purple.

The origin of the Red Hat Society was inspired by a poem by Jenny Joseph, which is about the author embracing life, having fun in her old age and doing the unexpected – like wearing a red hat and purple clothes. The Society is international and first began in the United States.

“The ‘Fiery Fascinators’ is a genuinely friendly group, open to new members who are seeking friendship and fun.”
